Job Description

The Lawsons Group is a family-owned business that sells Timber, Fencing and Building materials to both the trade and DIY sectors.

The first Lawsons business was formed in 1921 and the Group has now grown to 32 branches, has close to 750 employees, a turnover of £160m and is highly profitable and cash generative. Net assets now exceed £75m.

The Group has grown rapidly over the last 2 years through several strategic acquisitions and further expansion is likely in the next 2-3 years.

The Purchasing Manager will contribute to Company profits, stability, and growth by ensuring that the company purchases products at the most competitive prices whether the buying terms are negotiated directly or indirectly by Lawsons. At the same time the suppliers to the company must be those that fit with our vision of quality and service to our customers.

The Role

Key Accountabilities:

• Supplier performance and availability of stock

• Maximising deals and suppliers via our Buying group Fortis

• Ensure Lawsons Best Practice, Standards ad Company Policies are continually met.

• Exceed sales and profit budgets whilst managing costs.

• Take necessary actions to correct shortfalls and below budget performance.

• Ensure the individuals at branch level are developed and deployed to maximum effectiveness.

• Ensure talented individuals are recruited, identified, and trained. Also develop staff succession plans.

• Continually explore, develop, and implement opportunities for increasing the effectiveness and profitability of branch trading activities.

• Regularly communicate with Branch, Head office and Senior Management on all issues relating to profitability and operational performance.

• Take overall responsibility for all administrative and auditable tasks.

• Work collaboratively with other area managers, positively contributing to the executive to progress and develop the business.

• Able to prioritise responsibilities under pressure.

• Highly self-motivated with excellent time management skills.

• Ability to be hands-on where needed and lead from the front when required.

• Driven by achieving results by motivating staff and advising management.

• Someone who will promote and develop the company's culture and values.

Knowledge, Experience, Qualifications

• Commercial awareness of the industry and associated sales and operations at branch level.

• Previous managerial experience, and willing to learn and embrace new technologies.

• Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

• Capable of providing insightful and balanced views on business risks and issues.

• Understanding of the business financials.

• Driving License.
