Job Description

The Lawsons Group is a family-owned business that sells timber, fencing and building materials to both the trade and DIY sectors. The Group contains the Lawsons, AVS Fencing and Hertfordshire Timber & Building Supplies brands.

The first Lawsons business was formed in 1921 and the Group has now grown to 32 branches, has close to 750 employees, a turnover of £160m and is highly profitable and cash generative. Net assets now exceed £75m.

The Group has grown rapidly over the last 2 years through a number of strategic acquisition’s and we anticipate that we will add at least a further 8 to 10 Branches over the next 9 - 12 months.

Due to the growth of the business and the consolidation of the finance function across the Group, we are now looking for an Internal Auditor to cover the Southern area of the business who will be based in our Southern Office in Horsham Travel will be an essential part of the role and will cover 16 of our Branches which are all 15 to 75 minutes drive from Horsham. 

The role is varied and will include:

  • Working alongside the Northern internal auditor to review the existing audit scope and develop annual working papers to identify risks and determine objectives.
  • Conduct a minimum of one operational audit at each of your branches per year to determine compliance with policies and procedures and the effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Produce audit reports and recommendations with an action plan to review.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of compliance policies and processes.
  • Working closely with the Group Financial Accountant to improve and implement our stocktaking process. Attendance at a selection of stocktakes.
  • Support and train, particularly new staff, on cashing up/banking, stocktaking procedures and other operational functions.
  • Internal Chain of Custody audits for those branches under the scope in line with BM Trada requirements.
  • Trend analysis of cash monitoring functions and investigate attempts of fraud/theft within the business.
  • General day to day banking, cash collecting and petty cash administration.
  • Work closely with new branch management teams and/or new branch set ups to ensure compliance is understood and can be met and offer training where required.
  • Ad hoc projects.

    The Person:

    We are looking for someone who:

  • Has 3+ years internal audit, finance or merchant experience
  • Educated to HND/A level or equivalent
  • Clean driving license as site travel is essential.
  • Excellent analytical and report writing skills.
  • Proficient in the use of IT systems including Word and Excel
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees from every aspect of the business. A real ‘people person’.
  • Ability to meet deadlines but to also work using own initiative with minimum supervision.
  • Appreciation, acceptance of and a commitment to the importance of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work at different sites depending on the nature of the demands and occasionally weekends.

The person will report to the Finance Director but will work closely with their area manager.

The successful candidate will receive a starting salary of £35k - £37.5k, a generous benefits package, a car allowance/company car and inclusion in the Group Discretionary Profit Share Scheme.
